Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy says he is “very honoured and proud” to be world number one, after clinching his third PGA Tour victory at the Honda Classic in Florida.

The 22-year-old golfer from Holywood only dropped one shot in a final round of 69 to become the second youngest number one – after Tiger Woods – since the rankings began in 1986.

On Sunday, McIlroy had to stop the former number one from pulling off one of his most remarkable wins after Woods, joint 18th teeing off, charged from nine behind to only two back – producing the lowest final round of his career with an eight under par 62.

Woods followed a 24-foot putt for birdie on the short 17th with an eight-footer for his second eagle at the last.

On the 18th hole, McIlroy was still two in front and he made the safest of pars for a closing 69 and a 12-under-par total that gave him the title and ended Luke Donald’s nine-month reign.

Rory McIlroy boosted his hopes of finishing the year as Europe’s top golfer when he sensationally holed a 15-foot bunker shot for birdie at the last to capture the Hong Kong Open on Sunday.

The U.S. Open champion, runner-up in Hong Kong twice before, came from three strokes behind heading to the final round to win by two strokes, firing a five-under-par 65 for a 12-under-par tally.

World number two McIlroy needed to win or finish second in Hong Kong to have any chance of denying Luke Donald the unprecedented feat of achieving the European and PGA Number One titles in the same season.

Turfgrass Consultancy developed and currently manage Rory’s practice academy with the sole emphasis of replicating tournament conditions from around the globe.

John A. Solheim, Chairman & CEO of Karsten Manufacturing had a very unusual encounter during the third round of The Rolex Trophy at Golf Club de Genève on Friday. Solheim hit a 58 degree PING Anser Wedge from 70 yards out on the par 5 8th hole. The shot sailed over the green where the ball appeared to hit the bag of the mother of European Challenge Tour Professional Jorge Campillio. Initially the ball a Titleist Pro V1 could not be identified however on closer inspection it was found located inside an almost empty bottle of Evian mineral water. The bottle was in an open pocket of Campillios’ mothers bag. The force of the impact created a 60mm fracture in the top of the bottle. On impact the ball penetrated the Evian bottle. Not fully knowing what to do from a rules of golf perspective Solheim dropped another ball and completed the hole, keeping the bottle and ball together as a memento.

John Solheim’s group included professional Jorge Campillo, John Clarke, CEO of PING EMEA and Mark Casey, European Solheim Cup Director.

We look forward to welcoming John and the Solheim Family to Ireland in September for The 2011 Solheim Cup.
